Writing and Art

Never  give up.  Never Surrender.
(Galaxy Quest)

Sometimes when I work on the Angel of Death manuscript it reminds me of of the process of creating other types of art.  When I learned how to use color, shape, form, texture, balance, rhythm, etc., to create art works I was learning a language I could use to communicate a message, thought or feeling to others.  I can't tell you how many times I lay awake at night trying to figure out how to get my message across through my current watercolor, jewelry piece, ceramic creation or design project.  I do the same thing with my writing and I have come to see writing as another art form for me, another form of creative expression of a thought, feeling or idea.

And just as I did with my art projects I spend plenty of time second guessing myself, re-doing bits and pieces and measuring my work against that of people who have been doing it for years.  Of course when I do the last bit I feel like I always fall short.  But then there are those moments when I read a scene I wrote and realize that it  if I didn't know I wrote it I would be looking for a copy of the book so I could read the rest.  And those moments . . .  Well those moments make all the work, frustration and insecurity I experience in  the process worth it.  And those moments are the ones that keep me moving forward, writing that next word, sentence, paragraph, with the knowledge that I really CAN do this if I choose it and am willing to work at it.

And if I can do it you can too.
